S.T.A.R Puppy Class

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy: 20 Steps for Success
The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program focuses on all the things every puppy and owner need to have a great start together.
STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner and in six weeks of STAR puppy classes, puppies and dogs learn the following behaviors and skills:

Owner Behaviors:

  2. Owner receives Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge
  3. Owner describes adequate daily play and exercise plan

  4. Owner can hug or hold puppy (depending on size)
  5. Puppy allows owner to take away a treat or toy

Pre-Canine Good Citizen® Test Behaviors:

  1. Allows (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner
  2. Grooming-Allows owner handling and brief exam (ears, feet)
  3. Walks on a Leash-Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps)
  4. Walks by other people-Walks on leash past other people 5-ft away
  5. Sits on command-Owner may use a food lure
  6. Down on command-Owner may use a food lure
  7. Comes to owner from 5-ft when name is called
  8. Reaction to Distractions-distractions are presented 15-ft away
  9. Stay on leash with another person (owner walks 10 steps and returns)

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy prepares pups to move on to Canine Good Citizen training. For example, in STAR, puppies must walk on a leash in a straight line. In CGC, the task becomes more advanced with dogs walking in a pattern that includes right and left turns and stops. The skills in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes are practical and functional. Teaching puppies to tolerate grooming, handling, and basic exams of the ears, feet, and mouth will result in well-mannered puppies that veterinarians are happy to see.

I can't say enough good things about Ruff Day Resort! The staff is fantastic and energetic and my dog loves going to daycare now! I have peace of mind knowing she is in a great place while I am at work.

I highly recommend Ruff Day Resort! The facility is clean and the big and little dogs are separated. Our puppy loves it and we love how tired she is when we pick her up after a long day of playing!
- Nicole W

My yorkie-poo adores her time at Ruff Day Resort. She starts barking as soon as we get to the parking lot because she can't wait to see her 4-legged and 2-legged friends! The entire staff cares so much and takes wonderful care of my girl!

Both of our rescues needed training and there is no one else we would consider using than Amy and Ruff Day Resort. Their only focus is the well being of the animals entrusted to her.
- Scott B

My dog means everything to me, so when looking for a doggy daycare and boarding place I was very hesitant. But Amy was truly amazing from the second I met her! My dog loves doggy daycare and was completely exhausted afterwards! I will forever go to Ruff Days!! Thank you Amy and staff!!
- Michele

Amy is amazing! She's got incredible insight into the needs of individual dogs and families. By following her suggestions (and sticking to it!) we've seen results with our dog that no other trainer could help us achieve! Any facility under her leadership will flourish.
